The OpenAI Hype Is Fading — And That's Actually Good News for Enterprise AI

Something shifted in the AI landscape in early 2026 — and if you've been paying attention, you've felt it.

The breathless excitement around OpenAI that defined 2023 and 2024 has given way to something more complicated: scrutiny. Real questions about revenue, reliability, leadership, and whether the world's most famous AI company can actually deliver on its promise for enterprise customers.

This isn't a collapse. But it is a correction — and corrections are where clarity emerges.

The Numbers Tell a Story

ChatGPT's US mobile app share dropped from 69.1% in January 2025 to 45.3% by early 2026 (Apptopia). That's not a rounding error. That's a structural shift in how people and businesses are choosing AI tools.

At the same time, Anthropic's Claude crossed a milestone that would have seemed impossible 18 months ago: 34.4% of American businesses paid for Claude in April 2026, versus 32.3% for ChatGPT — the first time OpenAI has been surpassed in enterprise business adoption. More telling: among new enterprise buyers since February 2026, Anthropic wins approximately 70% of head-to-head evaluations against OpenAI (Ramp). That's not a lagging indicator — it's a leading one.

Meanwhile, OpenAI reportedly missed internal revenue targets in early 2026, triggering a drop in share prices for key partners including Oracle (-7.7%), SoftBank (-10%), Nvidia (-1.6%), AMD (-3.4%), and Broadcom (-4%). The company's CFO acknowledged concerns about funding its $600 billion compute roadmap if revenue momentum doesn't recover.

These aren't the metrics of a company firing on all cylinders — the company's own words notwithstanding.

The Leadership Exodus

Between April and May 2026, OpenAI lost several senior executives in rapid succession:

  • Bill Peebles — Head of Sora
  • Kevin Weil — VP of OpenAI for Science
  • Srinivas Narayanan — CTO of B2B Applications
  • Fidji Simo (Product & Business Chief) — on medical leave
  • Kate Rouch (Marketing Chief) — stepped down
  • Brad Lightcap (COO) — moved to "special projects"

The departure of the CTO of B2B Applications is particularly notable for enterprise customers. That's the role responsible for making OpenAI's technology actually work in production business environments — the hardest part of the problem.

The acquisition of Tomoro, a UK consultancy of ~150 forward-deployed engineers, tells the same story from a different angle. OpenAI is building what it's calling an "OpenAI Deployment Company" — essentially an army of integrators to go into enterprises and make their technology actually land. When a $300 billion company needs to acquire a consulting firm to get its product deployed, that's a signal about where the real friction is.

The Trial That Changed the Narrative

In April 2026, a federal trial in Oakland began with Elon Musk suing OpenAI, Sam Altman, and Greg Brockman, seeking up to $150 billion in damages.

The trial itself may or may not succeed. But the testimony has been damaging in a different way: it surfaced what OpenAI insiders actually think of the company's leadership.

Former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever testified that Altman exhibited "a consistent pattern of lying." Former CTO Mira Murati accused Altman of "creating chaos." Former board members cited repeated dishonesty as the reason for the 2023 attempt to remove him.

For enterprise buyers, trust in a vendor is foundational. When a vendor's own former executives describe a culture of dishonesty at the top, that's due diligence information — not just drama.

The Real Problem: Enterprise Deployment

Perhaps the most revealing recent headline about OpenAI came from The Decoder: "OpenAI's biggest problem may not be building AI but getting companies to actually use it beyond ChatGPT."

This is the crux. OpenAI has built extraordinary models. But enterprise adoption — the hard, unglamorous work of integrating AI into real business workflows with real reliability requirements — is where the gap between hype and reality shows up.

The numbers support this. Industry-wide research paints a sobering picture:

  • 95% of enterprise AI pilots deliver zero measurable P&L impact (MIT, 2025)
  • 42% of companies abandoned most AI projects in 2025 (S&P Global)
  • Only 21% of S&P 500 companies mentioned an AI benefit in earnings disclosures (Morgan Stanley)

A note on the MIT figure: the methodology has been criticized for its narrow definition of success — measured as P&L impact within six months, excluding efficiency gains. Even accounting for that, the convergence with S&P Global and Morgan Stanley data tells a consistent story: most enterprise AI deployments are not yet delivering measurable value.

OpenAI's own CFO put it plainly at Davos in January 2026, describing a "capability overhang" — enterprises are using a fraction of what the models can do. When your own CFO names the deployment gap as the primary bottleneck, you can't dismiss it as a competitor narrative.

These numbers don't indict OpenAI specifically — they reflect a broader pattern of AI deployments that look impressive in demos and disappoint in production.

Benchmark ceiling. In head-to-head comparisons, Operator, Manus, and Claude's agent all cluster around 72-75% success rates. There's no meaningful differentiation — and 25-30% failure rates are unacceptable for production enterprise workflows.

Pricing opacity. Access requires ChatGPT Pro at $200/month, with no clear enterprise pricing path or SLA.

Vendor lock-in by design. Operator runs on OpenAI's frontier model — full stop. There's no model routing, no fallback, no optimization layer. When OpenAI has an outage or a pricing change, your agents feel it immediately.

This is the fundamental tension in OpenAI's agent strategy: a single-model agent from a single vendor, priced for consumers, being positioned as an enterprise solution.
